Compositions

Rhythmic Study

A pleasing algorithmic study of rhythm for solo piano, performed here by Roger McVey.

String Quartet in Fifths

The second, third, and fourth movements of this work use algorithmic processes to generate contrapuntal layerings of speeds and intensities. By exploiting the natural tuning of the quartet—the violins a fifths or twelfth away from the lower strings—the generative algorithms are able to produce richly dissonant harmonies. The first movement is a joint homage to Reich and Haydn. Performed by Giselle Hillyer, Aidan Steinkamp, Ruby Fulton, and Miranda Wilson.

Spectral Lattices

My first purely orchestral piece, drawing inspiration from two of the greatest post-tonal orchestral composers: Anna Þorvaldsdóttir and Witold Lutosławski. Performed by the University of Idaho Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Josh Skinner.

Two Songs

With texts composed by the poet Afton Montgomery. Sung by Michelle Drake, accompanied by Peter Shelley.

Vogelnest

This short vocal trio sets a text by my niece, Ellie Trümpler. Ellie’s poem is a whimsical acrostic of Vogelnest (bird nest). I’ve set it in an embellished canon for three high voices, mirroring a key ensemble form Ellie’s favorite opera, Die Zauberflöte. Performed by Zoë Miller, Mikaila Calhoun, and Kaitlyn Atchison.
